How do you dye cotton yarn naturally?
Soak the cotton yarn in water with washing soda dissolved in the water for the mordant. Heat to simmer and continue to simmer for 30 minutes to one hour. The yarn can continue to soak in the mordant solution while the dye bath is being prepared. I use 30 grams of washing soda for every 100 grams of cotton yarn.
How do you dye yarn green naturally?
Mix 1 cup of salt with 16 cups of water and bring to a boil (or ½ cup of salt with 8 cups of water). Simmer your fabric in this solution for one hour prior to dyeing. (If you are making a plant/veggie based dye, mix 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water and follow the same process). When done simmering, run under cool water.
Can you dye already colored yarn?
When overdyeing an already dyed yarn, you will need to consider how the colors will blend. Is the original yarn a light tan or ecru color? Then you can probably dye it almost any color you want.
