What dye works on acrylic yarn?
The type of dye which works best for acrylics is called Basic dye. The only dye that will color acrylic yarn or fabric to a deep, intense, or bright color is basic dye. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend that you use basic dye in your home. Some basic dyes are carcinogenic or mutagenic.
Can I dye acrylic yarn?
Unlike animal and plant fibers such as wool or cotton, acrylic yarn is synthetic and does not absorb dye easily. One way to successfully change the color of acrylic yarn is to use light-colored yarn and a special dye called disperse dye.
Can you dye acrylic?
Acrylic is a difficult fiber to dye. You can’t use the same kinds of dyes that work on natural fibers. Don’t try all-purpose dye (such as Rit dye) or fiber reactive dye (such as a tie dye kit), because the dye will just wash out of acrylic, no matter what you try to fix it with. How do you set the color in acrylic yarn?

- Fill your clean wash basin with cold water.
- Submerge your finished crochet or knit project in the water.
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the bath and gently mix it in.
- Let project soak in the white vinegar bath for 30 minutes.
What are basic dyes?
Basic dyes are water-soluble cationic dyes that are mainly applied to acrylic fibers, but find some use for wool and silk. Usually acetic acid is added to the dye bath to help the uptake of the dye onto the fiber. Basic dyes are also used in the coloration of paper.
Can you dye acrylic in washer?
Most acrylic clothes can be machine-washed. However, some labels may recommend dry cleaning because the trim or inner structure may not be washable. Delicate items and sweaters should be hand-washed and dried flat to prevent stretching.
