Should I roll my skein of yarn into a ball?

After unfolding the hank, loop it around a swift (or chair back, or the hands of a willing friend) to keep it stable as you follow the steps below to wind it into a ball.
Why does yarn not come in a ball?
The biggest reason yarn so often comes in hanks is that it travels much more reliably that way. Wound balls tend to snag, fall apart, and generally become tangled knots. Also, leaving yarn unwound is usually better for the fiber for storage. When yarn is wound, it puts tension on the fiber.
Should I reroll my yarn?
It’s more important to rewind into a center-pull ball of yarn if you are buying some specialty yarns that are basically a loose oval of yarn twisted into a loose figure eight – this structure is called a “hank.” There’s no need to rewind a typical commercial center-pull skein.
